Security Vulnerability

In Apple Vision Pro Mixed Reality Headsets

A security vulnerability has recently been discovered affecting Apple’s Vision Pro mixed reality headsets. If this vulnerability can be exploited, it would allow attackers to infer data entered via the virtual keyboard. The attack, known as GAZEploit, has been documented by academics from the University of Florida, the CertiK Skyfall team, and Texas Tech University.

The GAZEploit Attack

The GAZEploit attack is based on the ability to analyze ocular biometrics associated with the image of a virtual avatar. Researchers have discovered that it is possible to analyze the eye movements (or “gazes”) of the successor called “Persona” to deduce which keys a user types using a virtual keyboard. This vulnerability becomes significant in situations where users share an avatar in virtual environments, such as video calls, online meetings, or live streaming platforms.

How the Attack Works?

One concerning aspect of this vulnerability is its ability to compromise user privacy. If an attacker can analyze a virtual avatar during an online communication, they can potentially reconstruct what is typed on the virtual keyboard and obtain sensitive data such as passwords. The attack’s methodology involves developing a supervised learning model trained with recordings of Persona, as well as ocular aspect ratio (EAR) data and gaze estimation data. This allows attackers to distinguish typing sessions from other activities, such as watching videos or playing games within the virtual environment.

Privacy Implications

Analyzing eye movements also involves mapping gaze directions on the virtual keyboard to specific keys, taking into account the keyboard’s location in virtual space during typing. This enables attackers to generate inferences about keystrokes remotely. The ability to capture and analyze the video of the virtual avatar is highlighted as an innovation in the field of security attacks, positioning GAZEploit as the first known attack to use filtered gaze information to infer keystrokes.

Apple’s Response to the Vulnerability

After responsible disclosure of this vulnerability, Apple addressed the issue through an update to visionOS 1.3, released on July 29, 2024. In a security advisory, Apple noted that virtual keyboard inputs could be inferred through the “Persona” component and implemented solutions to mitigate the problem. One of the solutions involves removing “Persona” when the virtual keyboard is active, to prevent possible leaks of the entered data.

Conclusion on Mixed Reality Security

In conclusion, GAZEploit not only highlights the importance of security measures in mixed reality technologies, but also the need for a swift and effective response to discovered vulnerabilities. User privacy and security must be a priority for tech companies, and users should be aware of the risks associated with using these types of devices that offer a combination of physical and virtual reality.
